When a picnic succeeds, it writes a unique kind of poetry into our hearts, of al fresco memories and friendship. It feeds our inner nomad and makes us yearn to sink on to nature’s carpet once more.”

Carola Perla

Miami’s own Carola Perla is an award-winning visual poetry artist and historical fiction writer, and since 2019, the owner & stylist of PASPALUM.

PASPALUM is one of the first, if not the original Miami picnic company, and started as a passion project, inspired by Carola’s lifelong love of all things nomadic.

Born in Romania to German and Peruvian parents, Carola’s childhood was spent crossing continents and language barriers, rambling in Bavarian mountain meadows, and taking afternoon tea on apartment floors. As a penniless Art History student at Florida State University in the late 1990s, she drew solace and inspiration from bohemians like Eduard Manet and Vanessa Bell. She hosted sangria parties with hand-cut paper lanterns and blue-washed the walls of her living room (much to her landlord’s dismay.)

Her interest in the ephemeral and the transient would later result in a 400-page novel on postwar exile, an international tourism PR firm, a Wynwood art gallery, and numerous immigrant-themed art installations and exhibits.

But setting the stage for the spontaneity of bohemian exchange remains Carola’s true passion, and as such, the driving force behind PASPALUM.
